Wet Weather Day Skye
Wet weather day on Skye.
Personally this is all about finding that perfect location to lunch, read, sip wine, a scottish gin or malt whisky. Why you ask? There is nothing more wonderful that watching stormy seas knowing you are warm, safe and sound so that comfy spot is important in addition to the window and view. Showers of rain, winds and more are the norm for us here on Skye. Breaks in the weather when they arrive are quite magnificent offering blue skies, amazing colours too.
A leisurely lunch combined with visits to indoor attractions are the best plan. So where to they ask?
Dunvegan Castle, Waternish to Skye Skyns and Stein Inn followed by Edinbane Pottery
or
Dunvegan Castle to The Dunvegan for Lunch followed by a road trip to Glendale and Skye Weavers.
Lunch within easy reach of Dunvegan:
Dunvegan Castle, or ‘Caisteal Dhùn Bheagain,’ is located 1 mile north of Dunvegan on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. It is the MacLeod family seat, overlooking Loch Dunvegan. This fortified site was first built in the 13th century, with significant 19th-century mock-medieval remodeling. The castle and gardens are beautiful even in wet weather. I enjoy taking a hot drink, book, and snack to the old potting sheds in the walled garden. It’s peaceful.
Skye Weavers offers locally sourced wool from Skye Sheep for cozy hats, scarves, shawls, and Tweed, all powered by pedal power. We love sourcing fabrics for our soft furnishings from them. Located on the road to Glendale.
Glendale Alpaca Shop in Dunvegan offers bed blankets from their herd in Glendale. We recommend them for gifts, especially on cooler nights.
Edinbane Pottery is by far one of my own favorite potteries and not just because is nearby. Over the years we have purchased and made bespoke orders for shipping too. Have a wee look see for yourself.
Visit Talisker Distillery and enjoy lunch at 'Three Chimneys at Talisker.' Prebook the distillery tour, but tastings at the visitors center are available without prior arrangements. You can also have lunch at 'The Oyster Shed' above the distillery, open 11am-5pm, closed on Sundays, featuring open-air dining on a rustic table.
Whether you book ahead or just arrive, you'll love 'The Old Inn' by Loch Harport in Colbost. Visit their website for a glimpse of this authentic Scottish pub with delicious pub grub.
With long days: May to September the sun almost never sets here on the Isle of Skye giving you plenty of time for exploring during daylight hours. https://www.skyelodge.co.uk
Our Village:
Dunvegan Village (Dun Bheagain - Scots Gaelic) does not disappoint. Quiet yet thriving and definitely worthy of consideration due to the number of quality restaurants and accommodation providers in area. Our local walks and landmarks are worthy of note. Take time to consider Dunvegan as your destination
It is all about location, location, location.. The routes to and from Dunvegan provides an abundance of opportunities.
Wet weather plan: Consider a long lunch in Portree or Staffin. Top choices for views and service include The Greshornish Hotel, The Skegbost Hotel, The Cuillin Hills Hotel (View Restaurant), The Uig Hotel, and Flodigarry beyond Staffin. Don’t miss The Skye Museum of Island Life (check their hours). Enjoy great food and stunning views. The Cuillins Hotel is special to us as we married there; it has a lovely garden and is close to Portree. Don’t shy away from exploring, even in the rain.
